Luca Signorelli, a master of the Italian Renaissance, depicts a gathering of ecclesiastical scholars arranged in a triangular formation that conforms to the architectural constraints of the vault. The figures are rendered with a focus on anatomical precision and the weight of their heavy drapery, which reflects the artist's interest in the human form.

The scene presents various saints and theologians engaged in study, their attention directed towards codices and manuscripts. The palette is dominated by gold leaf backgrounds, a choice that links the work to earlier medieval traditions while the figures themselves exhibit the sculptural quality characteristic of Signorelli's mature style. The inscription at the base, 'DOCTORVM SAPIENS ORDO', identifies the group as an orderly assembly of wise men. Each figure is distinguished by individualised facial features and specific vestments, ranging from the simple habits of monastic orders to the elaborate robes of high-ranking church officials.
