A classic Baroque depiction of Diana and her nymphs engaged in an archery contest, painted by the Italian master Domenichino.
Domenichino, a pupil of Annibale Carracci, painted this work during his time in Rome. It depicts a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses, where the goddess Diana and her companions engage in an archery contest. The composition is structured around the central figure of Diana, who stands with her bow raised, while her nymphs demonstrate their skill in various poses. To the right, a nymph restrains a hound, adding a sense of movement to the otherwise staged arrangement of figures.
The painting reflects the classicising tendencies of the Bolognese school, prioritising clarity of form and a balanced distribution of figures across the pictorial space. The palette consists of earthy tones, blues, and soft flesh tints, set against a backdrop of rolling hills and distant mountains. Domenichino uses light to define the musculature and drapery of the figures, creating a sense of volume that is characteristic of his approach to the human form. The inclusion of small narrative details, such as the bird perched on a target in the distance, provides a sense of depth and scale to the scene.
This work is held in the collection of the Galleria Borghese in Rome. It demonstrates the artist's ability to synthesise classical themes with the naturalistic observation of his contemporaries. The figures are arranged in a frieze-like manner, which draws upon the influence of Raphael and antique sculpture. The painting remains a clear example of the early seventeenth-century Roman Baroque style, where order and grace are maintained despite the active nature of the subject matter.
