An eighteenth-century Dutch etching depicting two dogs reading letters, based on a fable involving the mythological figure Actaeon.
This etching by Andries van Buysen (Sr.) depicts a scene from a fable, as indicated by the French inscription at the top of the plate. The text describes two dogs who, having consumed the tongue of their master Actaeon, gained the ability to speak and are shown here reading letters found along their path. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the foreground features the two dogs engaged with a document, while the background provides a narrative context showing figures in a rural setting.
Van Buysen employs a precise, linear technique characteristic of early eighteenth-century Dutch printmaking. The foreground dogs are rendered with careful attention to anatomical form and texture, their postures suggesting an active, inquisitive exchange. The background, though smaller in scale, maintains a consistent level of detail, with trees and rolling hills providing a sense of depth. The use of cross-hatching and varied line weights creates a clear distinction between the shaded areas under the trees and the open, sunlit ground where the dogs stand.
As a book illustration, this work demonstrates the period's interest in moralising tales and allegorical subjects. The artist balances the fantastical nature of the narrative with a grounded, realistic approach to the environment. The print reflects the technical standards of the era, where clarity of line was essential for reproduction in printed volumes. This piece offers a glimpse into the intersection of literature and visual art in the Dutch Republic, where fables were frequently adapted for both educational and entertainment purposes. The print remains a fine example of the illustrative craft of the time, maintaining its clarity and narrative focus through the artist's disciplined use of the etching needle.
