This fresco, located within the Bardi Chapel of the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence, depicts the final moments of Saint Francis of Assisi. Giotto di Bondone moves away from the rigid Byzantine conventions of his predecessors, opting for a more humanised approach to religious narrative. The composition is divided into two distinct registers: the earthly scene of the mourning friars surrounding the deceased saint, and the celestial realm above.

In the lower section, the figures are arranged with a sense of physical weight and volume. Their expressions and postures convey individualised grief, a departure from the stylised uniformity often seen in earlier medieval art. The central figure of Saint Francis lies upon a bier, his body rendered with anatomical awareness. The surrounding friars, dressed in their traditional habits, interact with the space, creating a sense of depth that draws the viewer into the scene. The inclusion of Saint Jerome, who examines the stigmata on the body of the saint, serves to verify the miraculous nature of the event.

The upper register introduces a shift in tone. A large crucifix hangs centrally, flanked by an angel who carries the soul of Saint Francis towards the heavens. The background, though simplified, provides a clear separation between the terrestrial sorrow below and the divine transition above. Giotto uses a muted palette of earth tones, ochres, and soft whites, allowing the narrative focus to remain on the emotional gravity of the figures. This work demonstrates the shift towards naturalism that defined the Proto-Renaissance period, as the artist prioritises the psychological state of the participants over purely symbolic representation.
