Dawn at Isawa in Kai Province is a woodblock print from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Produced during the Edo period, this work captures a quiet morning scene in the Kai Province. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the foreground, which depicts a cluster of thatched-roof houses and travellers moving along a path, and the background, which features the silhouette of Mount Fuji rising above a layer of low-hanging mist.
Hokusai employs a balanced colour palette, using soft pinks and oranges to suggest the early light of dawn, contrasted against the deep blues of the lower sky and the dark, solid forms of the mountain and trees. The use of negative space, particularly the expansive white area representing the mist, creates a sense of depth and atmospheric perspective. The figures in the foreground are rendered with minimal detail, yet their presence provides a sense of scale and human activity against the permanence of the mountain.

Katsushika Hokusai was a visionary Japanese artist whose influence stretched far beyond his lifetime.
