This engraving by Aegidius Sadeler (II) depicts a dramatic moment from the First Book of Samuel, where David faces the wrath of his own men following the raid on Ziklag. The composition is based on a design by Maerten de Vos, a prolific Antwerp artist whose influence is evident in the dynamic poses and the theatrical arrangement of the figures. Sadeler, a master of the burin, translates the original drawing into a highly detailed print, employing varied line weights to define the textures of armour, fabric, and the rugged terrain.
In the foreground, the central figure of David stands with hands clasped in prayer, his posture conveying a sense of resignation amidst the aggression of his soldiers. To the left, a soldier gestures towards him, while others in the background prepare to cast stones. The background features a burning city, rendered with atmospheric perspective to suggest the chaos of the aftermath of the Amalekite raid. The inclusion of Latin text at the base provides the scriptural context, a common feature in prints of this period intended for both devotional and educational purposes.
Sadeler was a central figure in the print culture of the Holy Roman Empire, working extensively in Prague under the patronage of Emperor Rudolf II. His technical precision allows for a clear distinction between the foreground action and the distant, smoke-filled horizon. The work captures the tension of the narrative through the contrast between the calm, central figure of David and the agitated, kinetic energy of the surrounding soldiers. This print is a fine example of the collaborative nature of printmaking in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, where the invention of a painter was disseminated through the technical skill of a specialist engraver.
