A detailed chiaroscuro woodcut from 1555 by Frans Floris, depicting the biblical scene of David performing for King Saul.
This chiaroscuro woodcut depicts the biblical narrative of David soothing King Saul with music. Frans Floris, a central figure in the Antwerp school during the sixteenth century, demonstrates his mastery of the Italianate style, which he adopted following his travels to Rome. The composition is organised around the seated figure of Saul, who appears agitated and physically restrained by attendants, while David stands to the left, focused on his harp. The inclusion of a small dog near the throne adds a domestic detail to the otherwise dramatic scene.
Floris employs the chiaroscuro technique to create volume and depth through tonal variation. By using multiple woodblocks to print different shades of grey and black, the artist achieves a sculptural quality in the figures. The musculature of the men and the folds of their classical-style drapery reflect the influence of Michelangelo and other Roman masters. The architectural elements in the background provide a sense of space, grounding the figures within a defined interior. The inscription at the base confirms the date of 1555 and identifies the artist, providing a clear record of the work's origin in the mid-sixteenth century.
This print is a representative example of the dissemination of Mannerist aesthetics in Northern Europe. The elongated proportions and the dynamic, somewhat theatrical poses of the figures are characteristic of the period. The work functions as both a narrative illustration and a display of technical skill in the medium of printmaking. The balanced arrangement of the figures, despite the underlying tension of the subject matter, demonstrates the artist's control over complex group compositions. This piece offers a view into the artistic exchanges between the Low Countries and Italy, showing how classical motifs were integrated into the Northern tradition of graphic arts.
