Beschreibung
A sixteenth-century Persian miniature depicting dervishes in ritual dance, taken from a manuscript of the Divan of Hafiz.
This miniature painting originates from a sixteenth-century manuscript of the Divan of Hafiz, the collected works of the celebrated Persian poet. The scene depicts a group of dervishes engaged in a ritual dance, a practice central to Sufi spiritual expression. The figures are rendered with the characteristic precision of the Safavid period, where the focus remains on clarity of form and the harmonious arrangement of colour.
The composition employs a flattened perspective, typical of Persian manuscript illumination, which prioritises the decorative quality of the page over three-dimensional realism. The figures wear traditional robes in shades of blue, green, and soft pink, set against a dark, textured background that suggests an outdoor setting. The artist uses fine brushwork to define the facial features and the folds of the garments, while gold accents provide a subtle luminosity to the scene.
Persian miniatures of this era were produced in royal workshops, where calligraphers and painters collaborated to create manuscripts for the elite. The integration of text and image was a primary concern, ensuring that the visual narrative complemented the lyrical themes of Hafiz. This specific folio captures the ecstatic movement of the dervishes, reflecting the spiritual themes of love and longing found within the poetry. The work demonstrates the technical mastery of the period, particularly in the application of mineral pigments and the delicate handling of line. As a museum-grade fine art print, this piece offers a glimpse into the sophisticated artistic traditions of the Islamic world, where the act of copying and illustrating poetry was a highly regarded intellectual pursuit. The print preserves the texture and colour of the original manuscript page, allowing for a close examination of the painterly techniques employed by the anonymous masters of the Safavid court.
