Dalet Zayin - Morris Louis

A seminal work of Color Field painting, Dalet Zayin features vertical bands of poured pigment on unprimed canvas, emphasising the optical power of colour.

Dalet Zayin is a representative work from the series of paintings Morris Louis produced between 1957 and 1959. This series, titled the Aleph series, draws its name from the Hebrew alphabet. Louis utilised Magna, an early acrylic resin paint, which allowed him to thin the pigment to a consistency that could be poured directly onto unprimed canvas. This technique enabled the paint to soak into the fibres rather than sitting on the surface, creating a stained effect that removes the physical evidence of the artist's brushwork.

The composition consists of vertical bands of colour that appear to flow down the canvas. The left side is dominated by a dense, opaque black column, which provides a stark contrast to the warmer, more translucent tones of orange and red on the right. The interaction between these vertical forms creates a sense of movement, as the colours bleed into one another and the raw canvas background. By eliminating traditional depth and figurative elements, Louis focuses the viewer's attention on the properties of the paint and the interaction of colour.

Louis was a member of the Washington Color School, a group of artists who moved away from the gestural style of earlier Abstract Expressionists. His approach prioritised the flatness of the picture plane and the optical experience of colour. In Dalet Zayin, the absence of a central subject forces an engagement with the scale and the physical presence of the work. The unpainted areas of the canvas act as a frame for the colour, allowing the pigments to breathe and interact with the negative space. This work demonstrates the artist's interest in the fluidity of paint and the potential for colour to define space without the need for traditional perspective or narrative structure.
