Dalet Kaf, painted in 1959, is a representative work from the series of the same name by Morris Louis. As a member of the Washington Color School, Louis developed a technique involving the application of thinned acrylic resin paint, known as Magna, onto unprimed canvas. This method allowed the pigment to soak directly into the fibres, rather than sitting on the surface as a traditional impasto layer would.

The composition features vertical bands of colour that appear to flow downwards, creating a sense of movement and transparency. The edges of these bands are soft, where the paint has bled into the raw fabric. The title, Dalet Kaf, refers to the Hebrew alphabet, a naming convention Louis used for several of his series during this period. The work avoids representational imagery, focusing instead on the interaction of hue, saturation, and the physical properties of the paint itself.

In this piece, the colours transition from deep, dark tones towards the centre, flanked by lighter, more translucent washes at the edges. The lack of a traditional focal point encourages the viewer to observe the entire surface as a unified field. By removing the artist's brushwork from the final appearance, Louis achieved a flat, optical effect that prioritises the purity of the colour. This approach was a departure from the gestural style of earlier abstract painters, moving towards a more controlled, systematic application of medium. The raw canvas remains visible in areas, acting as a neutral ground that balances the intensity of the pigments. This print captures the subtle gradients and the specific texture of the original application, providing a clear view of the artist's technical process.
