A minimalist ink wash painting by Shibata Zeshin, depicting the symbolic hammer of the deity Daikoku accompanied by three mice.
Shibata Zeshin, a master of both lacquerware and painting, demonstrates his command of ink wash techniques in this work. The subject features the mallet of Daikoku, one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese mythology. Daikoku is traditionally associated with wealth and prosperity, and his hammer is said to grant wishes or produce gold coins when struck.
In this composition, Zeshin depicts the hammer alongside three mice. Mice are considered the messengers of Daikoku, often appearing in iconography related to the deity. The artist employs a minimalist approach, using varying densities of ink to suggest volume and texture. The dark, solid mass of the hammer head contrasts with the lighter, more fluid brushwork used to render the small rodents.
Zeshin was active during the transition from the Edo period to the Meiji era. His work often reflects a synthesis of traditional Japanese aesthetics and a personal, observational style. He was known for his ability to capture the essence of a subject with few strokes, a hallmark of the literati painting tradition. The inclusion of the artist's signature and seal on the right side provides a clear attribution to his later period, as indicated by the age noted in the inscription. This piece exemplifies the economy of form often found in his studies, where the negative space is as important as the painted elements. The work remains a fine example of the ink wash tradition, focusing on the symbolic relationship between the deity's attribute and his animal companions.
