Katsushika Hokusai produced this woodblock print as part of his series, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. The composition presents a view from the Aoyama district of Edo, where a group of figures enjoys a picnic beneath the dense, rounded canopy of a large pine tree. This tree, pruned into a cushion shape, occupies the foreground and provides a dark, textured contrast to the lighter tones of the middle ground and the distant mountain.
Mount Fuji dominates the background, rendered with the characteristic simplicity and geometric clarity that define Hokusai's approach to the subject. The mountain is capped with snow, while the base is obscured by horizontal bands of mist. These bands serve to separate the foreground activity from the distant peak, creating a sense of spatial depth. The colour palette relies on Prussian blue, a pigment that had recently become available in Japan, which Hokusai utilised to great effect in the sky and the mountain's shadow.
In the lower right, the figures are depicted in relaxed poses, engaged in conversation and dining. A stone lantern sits nearby, grounding the scene in a specific, cultivated environment. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance human activity with the grandeur of the natural world. The use of repeating, circular forms for the pine needles contrasts with the sharp, triangular silhouette of the mountain, a visual device that directs the viewer's eye across the frame.
