A 1907 graphic design study by Reinier Willem Petrus de Vries for the Dutch magazine 'De dierenvriend', featuring ink illustrations of horses and visible construction lines.
This work is a preparatory cover design for the Dutch periodical 'De dierenvriend' (The Animal Friend), dating from 1907. Reinier Willem Petrus de Vries, a Dutch artist known for his graphic work, employs a clear, linear approach typical of early twentieth-century commercial illustration. The composition is divided into a decorative header and a negative space intended for typography or further editorial content.
The upper section features a stylised scene of two horses flanking a central fountain, accompanied by smaller animals, all rendered in bold, dark ink strokes. The artist uses a simplified, almost silhouette-like technique to define the forms, which allows the image to remain legible even when reduced for print. Below this header, two additional horse studies appear as isolated figures, demonstrating the artist's process of refining animal anatomy before finalising the layout.
Visible graphite grid lines and construction marks remain on the paper, offering a view into the technical preparation required for magazine production during this period. The design reflects the influence of Art Nouveau through its use of sweeping, organic curves at the top corners of the frame, which contrast with the rigid geometry of the underlying grid. This piece provides a look at the intersection of fine art and functional graphic design in the Netherlands at the turn of the century. It captures the aesthetic priorities of the era, where animal subjects were frequently utilised in both decorative arts and popular literature to appeal to a growing public interest in nature and animal welfare.
