This work by Kaigetsudō Doshin captures a seated courtesan engaged in the act of writing. The Kaigetsudō school, active during the early eighteenth century in Edo, is known for its focus on bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women. The artist employs a bold, calligraphic line to define the figure, a hallmark of the school's approach to depicting the female form. The composition is balanced, with the subject occupying the centre of the frame against a neutral background, allowing the viewer to focus on the details of her attire.
The courtesan wears a kimono adorned with floral motifs, rendered in a palette of blue, white, and red. The fabric folds are depicted with precision, suggesting the weight and texture of the silk. Her posture is relaxed yet formal, reflecting the social expectations of the period. The scroll she holds is rendered in a stark, unadorned white, providing a visual contrast to the patterned garments. The artist's signature and seal appear on the right side of the composition, integrated into the overall design.
This piece exemplifies the aesthetic priorities of the Ukiyo-e genre, which sought to document the fashions and pastimes of the pleasure quarters.
