A refined Ukiyo-e hanging scroll by Utagawa Toyoharu, depicting a courtesan and her young attendant beneath a cherry tree.
This hanging scroll depicts a high-ranking courtesan accompanied by her young attendant, or kamuro, beneath the boughs of a blossoming cherry tree. Utagawa Toyoharu, the founder of the Utagawa school, demonstrates his command of the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the depiction of beautiful women. The figures are rendered with elongated proportions, a stylistic choice that emphasises the grace of their posture and the elaborate layering of their kimonos.
The courtesan wears a dark outer robe featuring subtle patterns, which contrasts with the red and gold accents of her undergarments. Her attendant mirrors this aesthetic, dressed in a smaller version of the traditional attire. The cherry blossoms, rendered in delicate white, provide a seasonal context, suggesting the ephemeral nature of beauty often explored in Edo-period art. The background remains relatively sparse, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the two figures and the texture of their clothing.
Toyoharu is particularly noted for his early experiments with Western-style perspective, known as uki-e, though this work remains firmly within the traditional aesthetic of the period. The use of ink and colour on silk provides a soft, muted quality to the image, differing from the sharper lines found in mass-produced woodblock prints of the same era. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the figures echoed by the trunk of the cherry tree to the left. This piece offers a glimpse into the fashion and social hierarchies of the Yoshiwara pleasure district, where such figures were frequently observed and documented by artists of the time.
