A seminal work of geometric abstraction by Theo van Doesburg, featuring bold diagonal bars intersecting a precise grid.
Counter-Composition VI is a work by the Dutch artist Theo van Doesburg, a founder of the De Stijl movement. Created in 1925, this painting represents a shift away from the strict horizontal and vertical axes that defined early De Stijl works. Van Doesburg introduced diagonal lines to his compositions, a development he termed Elementarism. He argued that these diagonals provided a sense of tension and dynamism that static right angles lacked.
The canvas features a grid of thin, dark lines set against a white background. Over this grid, two bold, black diagonal bars intersect. The arrangement creates a sense of movement across the surface. The work is devoid of representational elements, focusing instead on the relationship between line, plane, and space. By using a limited palette of black and white, the artist directs attention to the structural logic of the composition.
Van Doesburg intended for his art to reflect the order and clarity of the modern age. His departure from the rigid orthodoxy of Piet Mondrian, who insisted on purely horizontal and vertical lines, caused a rift between the two artists. Counter-Composition VI is a clear example of Van Doesburg's desire to push the boundaries of geometric abstraction. The painting functions as a study in spatial dynamics, where the diagonal elements disrupt the stability of the underlying grid. It remains a primary example of the intellectual rigour applied to early twentieth-century abstract painting.
