A detailed 1834 engraving by Christian Ernst Stölzel depicting the Coronation of the Virgin, featuring a celestial scene above the gathered Apostles.
This engraving, titled Coronatio S. S. Virginis, is a reproduction of a religious composition by Christian Ernst Stölzel, dated 1834. The work depicts the Coronation of the Virgin, a traditional subject in Christian iconography. The composition is divided into two distinct registers: the celestial realm above and the terrestrial realm below.
In the upper section, the Virgin Mary is seated beside Christ, who places a crown upon her head. They are surrounded by a host of cherubim and angels, some of whom play musical instruments, creating an atmosphere of divine order. The figures are rendered with the clarity and linear precision characteristic of the Nazarene movement, a group of German Romantic painters who sought to revive the aesthetic qualities of late medieval and early Renaissance art.
Below, the Apostles are gathered around an empty sarcophagus, which is filled with flowers. Their expressions are directed upward, reflecting their witness to the miraculous event occurring above. The figures are draped in heavy, classical robes, and their poses are balanced to create a sense of solemnity. The architectural elements of the tomb are rendered with geometric accuracy, providing a stable base for the more ethereal upper portion of the print.
Stölzel, a skilled engraver, employs a refined technique to translate the tonal values of the original painting into a monochrome medium. The use of hatching and cross-hatching allows for subtle gradations of light and shadow, particularly in the drapery and the clouds. This print reflects the mid-nineteenth-century interest in historical religious subjects and the technical mastery required to disseminate such imagery through the medium of engraving. The work remains a clear example of the formal rigour and devotional focus prevalent in German art during this period.
