A detailed Baroque etching by Francesco Faraone Aquila depicting the Emperor Constantine addressing his troops beneath a divine vision.
This etching by Francesco Faraone Aquila depicts the Emperor Constantine addressing his soldiers, a subject derived from the historical accounts of his conversion and military campaigns. The composition is structured around the central figure of Constantine, who stands before his tent, gesturing towards the heavens where a cross appears, surrounded by cherubs. This visual reference to the vision of the cross before the Battle of the Milvian Bridge is a recurring theme in Western art, intended to convey divine sanction for the Emperor's authority.
Aquila employs a dense, linear style characteristic of early eighteenth-century Italian printmaking. The scene is framed by a trompe l'oeil curtain, which creates a sense of theatricality and depth. The foreground is populated by soldiers in classical armour, their postures varied to suggest movement and engagement with the orator. To the right, a grotesque figure carries a helmet, providing a stark contrast to the orderly ranks of the Roman military. In the distance, the landscape includes architectural elements and a dragon-like creature, adding a layer of symbolic complexity to the narrative.
The print is executed with a high degree of technical precision, using cross-hatching to define form and shadow. The inclusion of Latin text at the base provides historical context, identifying the scene as an 'adlocutio', or formal military address. Aquila, a prolific engraver based in Rome, often reproduced works by other masters, and this piece reflects the stylistic conventions of the period, where historical and religious themes were frequently merged to create elaborate, didactic imagery. The work is a fine example of the reproductive print culture that allowed such complex compositions to circulate among collectors and scholars across Europe during the Baroque era.
