A 1914 avant-garde work by Kazimir Malevich, featuring a collage of the Mona Lisa defaced with red crosses to challenge traditional art authority.
Kazimir Malevich created this work in 1914, a period when he moved between the rigid structures of Cubism and the emerging language of Suprematism. The painting functions as a critique of traditional art institutions and the veneration of historical masterpieces. By incorporating a reproduction of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, Malevich engages in a direct confrontation with the past. He defaces the iconic image with red crosses, effectively cancelling out the authority of the Renaissance portrait within the context of his own modern, geometric composition.
The visual arrangement relies on a series of overlapping planes. A large, central black rectangle dominates the upper portion of the canvas, creating a stark contrast against the lighter, textured background. Below this, the collage element featuring the Mona Lisa is positioned alongside abstract shapes and Cyrillic text. The Russian text, which translates to 'Partial Eclipse', suggests a deliberate obscuring of cultural history. The inclusion of printed ephemera, such as the small advertisement for an apartment in Moscow, grounds the work in the urban reality of the early twentieth century.
Malevich employs a palette of muted tones, including cream, grey, and deep blue, which allows the black and red elements to command attention. The brushwork is varied, ranging from flat, opaque applications of paint to more gestural, calligraphic lines that define the lower section of the composition. This piece reflects the artist's desire to break away from representational art, using collage as a tool to disrupt the viewer's expectations. It is a calculated act of iconoclasm, positioning the artist as a force capable of dismantling the established hierarchy of art history through the lens of the avant-garde.
