Beschreibung
An early abstract work by Jackson Pollock, featuring a complex layering of fluid lines and spontaneous paint application.
Composition with Pouring II represents a transitional moment in the career of Jackson Pollock. Created during the early 1940s, this work precedes the fully realised drip paintings that defined his later career. It demonstrates his move away from figurative representation towards an exploration of automatic gesture and material application.
The canvas displays a complex layering of paint, where fluid lines intersect with broader, more deliberate brushwork. Pollock employs a palette dominated by deep blacks, muted blues, and accents of earthy red and cream. The application of paint varies from controlled, sweeping curves to spontaneous, thin splatters that suggest a rhythmic movement across the surface. Unlike his later, larger-scale works, this piece retains a sense of contained energy, where the marks remain tethered to the underlying structure of the composition.
This work reflects the influence of Surrealist automatism, a technique Pollock engaged with to bypass conscious control. By allowing the paint to dictate the form, he created a visual record of his physical interaction with the medium. The interplay between the dark background and the lighter, linear elements creates a sense of depth, drawing the eye through the chaotic yet balanced arrangement of marks. It is a study in the tension between order and disorder, capturing the artist at a point of stylistic shift. The work remains an example of the experimental period that preceded his international recognition, offering a view into the development of his signature technique.

Composition with Pouring II - Jackson Pollock
Artist Biography
Jackson Pollock
He drank heavily from his teens onwards. He was in and out of psychiatric treatment, tried Jungian analysis, and spent time working for the WPA Federal Art Project during the Depression. The early paintings are dark, tangled, influenced by Picasso and by the Mexican muralists Orozco and Siqueiros, whose experimental techniques (including pouring paint) Pollock encountered in a workshop.
The drip paintings started in 1947. He laid canvas on the floor of his barn in Springs, Long Island, and poured household enamel paint from tins, flicking and dripping it with sticks, trowels, and hardened brushes. He moved around the canvas, working from all four sides. No easel, no brushes touching surface, no predetermined composition. 'I am nature,' he told an interviewer, which sounds grandiose but describes the method accurately: the paintings record physical movement through space.
The drip period lasted roughly four years. By 1951 he had largely stopped, returning to figurative work that nobody wanted. His marriage to the painter Lee Krasner deteriorated alongside the drinking. He died in a car crash in 1956, at forty-four, drunk at the wheel. Krasner spent the next three decades managing his legacy and making her own paintings, which were excellent and consistently overlooked.
