A satirical 1882 woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshifuji depicting the cultural clash between traditional Japanese customs and Meiji-era westernisation.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshifuji, produced in 1882, captures the cultural friction during the Meiji period in Japan. The title, Kaika kyūhei kōhai kurabe, translates to a comparison between the new, enlightened ways and the old, antiquated customs. Yoshifuji, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, often utilised his work to comment on the rapid westernisation occurring within Japanese society at the time.
The composition depicts a chaotic scene where figures representing traditional Japanese life clash with symbols of western modernisation. One can observe characters wielding western items such as umbrellas, lamps, and clocks as weapons against those dressed in traditional samurai attire. The print functions as a visual satire, documenting the confusion and humour found in the transition between the Edo period and the modern Meiji era. The use of bold lines and a clear, graphic colour palette is characteristic of the late Ukiyo-e style, which began to incorporate more western-influenced pigments and printing techniques.
Yoshifuji includes various labels and text within the image, which provide context for the specific items or ideologies being mocked or celebrated. The print serves as a historical record of the social anxieties regarding the influx of foreign technology and fashion. By presenting this conflict as a literal battle, the artist illustrates the absurdity of the cultural shift. The work remains a primary example of how printmakers engaged with the rapid modernisation of Japan, using the medium to disseminate social commentary to a wide audience. The print is a fascinating look at the period when Japan navigated its identity between its own history and the globalised future.
