A striking Symbolist work by Ferdinand Hodler, featuring a solitary figure in a gesture of contemplation against a deep green background.
Ferdinand Hodler, a central figure in Swiss art at the turn of the twentieth century, produced this work during a period of intense exploration into Symbolist themes. The painting depicts a solitary female figure standing in profile against a flat, deep green background. Her arms are extended forward with palms pressed together, a gesture that suggests prayer, supplication, or a reaching toward an unseen presence. The composition is stark, stripping away unnecessary detail to focus on the silhouette and the psychological state of the subject.
Hodler developed a theory he termed Parallelism, which is evident here in the deliberate arrangement of the figure and the rhythmic quality of the pose. The contrast between the pale, luminous skin of the woman and the dark, textured green backdrop creates a sense of isolation. The black fabric at her feet anchors the figure, providing a grounding element to the otherwise ethereal nature of the scene. This work moves away from the naturalism of his earlier training, favouring a more conceptual approach where the human form acts as a vessel for universal human experience.
The artist often used his own life experiences to inform his work, and this piece reflects his interest in the metaphysical. By removing the subject from a specific time or place, Hodler invites the viewer to interpret the gesture as a universal act of communication. The lack of environmental context forces the eye to remain on the figure, analysing the tension in her posture and the deliberate placement of her hands. This print captures the muted tones and the specific, flattened perspective that defined Hodler's contribution to European Symbolism, offering a clear view of his technical precision and his interest in the expressive potential of the human body.
