A detailed botanical study of a flowering aloe by Victorian traveller and artist Marianne North, captured during her time in Tenerife.
Marianne North was a prolific Victorian traveller and painter who documented global flora with scientific precision. This work depicts the common aloe in its natural habitat on the island of Tenerife. North travelled extensively during the 1870s, often painting on location to capture the specific light and form of exotic plants before they could wilt or change.
The composition focuses on the central aloe spike, rendered with careful attention to the structure of the individual florets. The orange-red petals contrast against the muted green of the succulent leaves, which occupy the right side of the frame. North uses a clear, objective style, prioritising the accurate representation of the plant anatomy over decorative embellishment. In the background, a glimpse of the sea and the distant coastline provides a sense of the geographical context, a common feature in her work.
North donated her collection of over 800 paintings to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where they remain housed in a gallery designed specifically for them. Her approach was unusual for the period, as she preferred to paint in situ rather than from dried specimens. This method allowed her to record the plant in its environment, capturing the relationship between the flora and the surrounding terrain. Her work provides a record of botanical diversity as it appeared in the late nineteenth century. This print reproduces the original oil painting, maintaining the clarity of her brushwork and the specific colour palette she observed during her time in the Canary Islands.

Artist Biography
Marianne North
She was born in 1830 into a wealthy Norfolk family. Her father was an MP. She trained as a singer, but her voice failed and she turned to painting. She was devoted to her father and travelled with him until his death in 1869, which freed her to go further.
She painted plants in oils, not watercolours, and she painted them in situ within their habitats, including animals, people, and temples. In Borneo she painted a pitcher plant unknown to science, which was named Nepenthes northiana in her honour. Charles Darwin personally suggested she visit Australia. She completed 848 paintings in thirteen years, donated 832 to Kew Gardens, and paid for the gallery to house them herself. The Marianne North Gallery at Kew remains the only permanent solo exhibition in a major UK institution. She died in 1890.
