Beschreibung
A geometric abstract composition by Paul Klee, featuring overlapping watercolour planes and a rhythmic arrangement of colour.
Paul Klee produced this work during a period of intense experimentation with colour theory and geometric abstraction. Following his 1914 journey to Tunisia, Klee began to move away from purely representational subjects, focusing instead on the interaction of chromatic planes. In this composition, the artist employs a grid-like structure of overlapping shapes, which creates a sense of rhythmic movement across the surface of the paper.
The application of watercolour allows for a degree of transparency, where the layering of pigments produces secondary tones at the intersections of the forms. Klee treats the canvas as a field for musical notation, where each shape acts as a distinct note within a larger harmonic structure. The palette consists of earthy ochres, deep blues, and muted greens, punctuated by brighter circular forms that draw the eye across the frame. By reducing the subject matter to its fundamental geometric components, Klee invites the viewer to engage with the painting as a self-contained system of visual relationships rather than a depiction of the external world.
This piece reflects Klee's interest in the relationship between colour and musical composition. He often compared his creative process to the construction of a fugue, where individual elements are repeated and varied to build a cohesive whole. The lack of a traditional horizon line or vanishing point forces the viewer to focus on the surface qualities of the work. The edges of the shapes are defined by the bleed of the watercolour, softening the boundaries between the distinct colour fields. This approach creates a balance between the rigid geometry of the forms and the fluid nature of the medium, resulting in a work that feels both structured and organic.
