A nineteenth-century stereoscopic photograph by Francis Frith documenting the ancient temple ruins at Wadi es-Sebua, Egypt.
This stereoscopic photograph by Francis Frith captures the archaeological site of Wadi es-Sebua in Egypt during his second expedition to the region in 1857-1858. Frith, a pioneer of travel photography, utilised the wet-collodion process to document the ancient monuments of the Nile Valley. The image displays the entrance to the temple, featuring weathered colossi and sphinxes partially submerged in sand.
The composition includes human figures, which provide a sense of scale against the monumental stone structures. A local guide sits in the foreground, while two European travellers stand near the temple pylon. This juxtaposition of contemporary figures with ancient ruins was a common technique in nineteenth-century travel photography, intended to convey the vast history of the site to a Western audience. The stereoscopic format, designed for viewing through a stereoscope, creates a three-dimensional effect that was highly popular in Victorian households for armchair travel.
Frith's work is noted for its technical precision under difficult environmental conditions. The harsh desert light and extreme heat posed significant challenges for the chemical processes required for early photography. Despite these obstacles, the clarity of the stone carvings and the texture of the sand remain visible. This print offers a historical record of the temple before later archaeological excavations and the eventual relocation of the site due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam. The sepia tones are characteristic of the albumen printing process, which was the standard for commercial photography during this period. This piece provides a glimpse into the mid-nineteenth-century fascination with Egyptology and the documentation of antiquity.
