Kyōka, or 'mad verse', represents a form of satirical waka poetry that gained popularity among the urban classes during the Edo period. These volumes often combined literary wit with visual artistry, pairing short poems with illustrations that captured the essence of the text.
The image depicts a stylised wave, rendered with precise, rhythmic lines that suggest the movement of water. The composition is balanced, with the crest of the wave occupying the left and centre, while the right side contains the calligraphic text.
