Beschreibung

A refined ink and light colour study of a cock and hen by Meiji-era master Kawabata Gyokushō, showcasing his mastery of brushwork and naturalistic observation.

Kawabata Gyokushō was a prominent figure in the Meiji period art scene, known for his ability to bridge traditional Japanese ink painting techniques with the observational rigour of the era. This work, depicting a cock and a hen, demonstrates his mastery of the brush and his keen eye for animal anatomy. The composition is sparse, focusing entirely on the two birds against a neutral silk background.

Gyokushō uses a combination of wash and line to define the forms. The cock, rendered in darker, more saturated ink tones, provides a visual anchor for the piece. Its plumage is suggested through fluid, confident strokes that capture the texture of the feathers without resorting to excessive detail. The hen, positioned slightly in front, is depicted with lighter, more delicate ink applications, creating a balance between the two subjects.

The artist's training in the Maruyama-Shijō school is evident in the naturalistic posture of the birds. Rather than relying on rigid, formulaic representations, Gyokushō observes the specific movements and attitudes of his subjects. The subtle use of red pigment on the combs provides a singular point of colour, drawing the eye and adding a sense of life to the monochromatic palette.

This piece reflects the broader shift in Japanese art during the late nineteenth century, where artists sought to maintain the spirit of classical ink painting while incorporating a more direct engagement with the natural world. The work is an example of the refined aesthetic that defined the Nihonga movement, prioritising clarity, balance, and the expressive potential of the brush. It remains a clear representation of Gyokushō's technical skill and his contribution to the development of modern Japanese painting.
