A 1909 coastal scene by Gustave Loiseau, capturing the rugged Normandy cliffs at dusk through his signature cross-hatched brushwork.
Gustave Loiseau, a painter associated with the Post-Impressionist movement, produced this study of the Normandy coastline in 1909. The work captures the rugged chalk cliffs that define this region of northern France, a subject frequently explored by artists of the period. Loiseau employs a technique characterised by a cross-hatched application of paint, often referred to as 'trellis' work, which creates a textured surface across the canvas.
The composition focuses on the dramatic verticality of the cliff face, which occupies the right side of the frame, contrasting with the expansive, turbulent sea to the left. The evening light is rendered through a palette of cool blues, purples, and muted ochres, suggesting the transition of the day. Small figures are visible at the base of the cliff, providing a sense of scale against the geological mass. The sky is treated with softer, more diffuse brushwork, balancing the heavier impasto used for the rock formations and the breaking waves.
Loiseau spent significant time in Normandy, particularly in areas such as Étretat and Fécamp, where he observed the effects of light and weather on the coastal environment. His approach avoids the rigid structure of earlier academic painting, opting instead for a rhythmic, repetitive application of colour that unifies the scene. This work demonstrates his interest in the atmospheric conditions of the French coast, documenting the interaction between the solid, enduring cliffs and the transient nature of the sea and sky. The print captures the tactile quality of the original oil paint, preserving the distinct brushwork that defines Loiseau's mature style.
