Claustral, produced in 1959, belongs to the series of Stripe paintings by Morris Louis. This work demonstrates the artist's technique of pouring thinned acrylic resin paint, known as Magna, directly onto unprimed canvas. By tilting the support, Louis allowed the pigment to flow in controlled, vertical channels. The resulting bands of colour appear to soak into the fabric rather than sitting upon the surface, creating a sense of transparency and unity between the medium and the support.

The composition features a dense, central column of vertical stripes. These bands vary in width and hue, ranging from bright yellow and green to deep blues and reds. The surrounding areas of the canvas remain largely bare, which emphasises the verticality of the painted section. This negative space provides a stark contrast to the saturated colours, drawing the eye to the precise edges where the pigment meets the raw weave of the canvas.

Louis was a central figure in the Washington Color School. His approach moved away from the gestural brushwork associated with earlier abstract painters, favouring a more calculated application of colour. By eliminating the visible mark of the artist's hand, he allowed the properties of the paint and the gravity-driven flow to dictate the final form. This method creates a flat, optical experience that prioritises the interaction of colour over traditional pictorial depth. The title, Claustral, suggests a sense of enclosure or confinement, perhaps reflecting the tight, vertical arrangement of the stripes within the expansive white field of the canvas. This piece remains a clear example of the formal rigour and technical experimentation that defined his later career.
