A detailed etching by Otto Baron Howen capturing the historic Citadellepoort in Liège, showcasing his precise line work and architectural observation.
This etching by Otto Baron Howen depicts the Citadellepoort, or Citadel Gate, in Liège. Howen, a Baltic German officer and artist, produced a significant body of work documenting European architecture and urban scenes during his travels. His approach to the medium relies on a precise, linear technique that captures the texture of weathered stone and the organic growth of foliage clinging to the masonry.
The composition focuses on the arched gateway, which frames a glimpse of the town beyond. The structure of the gate is rendered with dense cross-hatching, providing a sense of weight and age. To the right, a domestic building with shuttered windows sits adjacent to the gate, creating a contrast between the defensive military architecture and the everyday life of the city. Small figures are positioned near the entrance, adding a sense of scale to the scene. The artist employs a varied line weight to distinguish between the rough, uneven surfaces of the stone walls and the softer, more delicate rendering of the trees and shrubs.
Howen's work reflects the nineteenth-century interest in documenting historical sites before the onset of rapid industrial modernisation. His prints often possess a documentary quality, yet they remain firmly rooted in the Romantic tradition of the picturesque. The scene is devoid of dramatic artifice, favouring a clear, observational style that prioritises architectural accuracy. This print offers a view into the urban character of Liège during the mid-nineteenth century, preserved through the meticulous application of ink on paper. The work is a fine example of the topographical print tradition, where the artist acts as both observer and chronicler of the built environment.
