A 1907 etching by Anders Zorn depicting a bather in water, rendered with fluid, expressive lines and masterful light effects.
Anders Zorn produced this etching, Circles of Water II, in 1907. It captures a solitary female figure wading into a body of water, a recurring motif in his graphic work. Zorn, a master of the etching medium, utilised rapid, confident lines to define the form of the bather and the movement of the water. The composition relies on the contrast between the stillness of the figure and the ripples spreading across the surface, which Zorn rendered through horizontal, broken strokes.
The artist possessed a technical ability to suggest light and atmosphere with minimal mark-making. By varying the pressure and density of his needle, he created a sense of depth and texture. The reflection of the figure in the water is particularly notable, as it breaks the solid form into fragmented, rhythmic lines that mimic the distortion caused by the water surface. This work reflects his interest in the interaction between the human form and the natural environment, a theme he explored throughout his career in both his paintings and his prints.

Artist Biography
Anders Zorn
Zorn painted three sitting American presidents: Grover Cleveland, William Howard Taft and Theodore Roosevelt. For a Swedish painter from a small town in Dalarna, the commissions represented an extraordinary international reach, built on a reputation as one of the finest portrait painters and etchers of his generation.
He was born in Mora in 1860, studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm, and worked across Paris, London and the United States. His ability to render water and flesh with loose, confident brushwork set him apart from more academic contemporaries. His etchings, numbering roughly three hundred, are considered among the finest of the period.
He returned to Mora later in life, establishing a museum and open-air museum there. The Zorn Museum remains a major cultural institution in Sweden. He died in Mora in 1920, at sixty.
