A classic Rinpa school folding screen by Ogata Kōrin, featuring white chrysanthemums set against a flowing stream and gold leaf background.
Ogata Kōrin, a central figure of the Edo period Rinpa school, produced this composition as a pair of six-panel folding screens. The work displays the characteristic aesthetic of the period: a synthesis of decorative art and natural observation. Against a ground of gold leaf, Kōrin places white chrysanthemum blossoms and dark green foliage, which contrast with the stylised, flowing stream rendered in deep blue and gold.
The stream itself is a recurring motif in Kōrin's oeuvre, depicted here with rhythmic, swirling lines that suggest constant motion. The chrysanthemums are arranged with a sense of deliberate spacing, allowing the gold background to function as an active element of the composition rather than mere negative space. This technique creates a sense of air and light, typical of the Rinpa style, which prioritised bold, graphic forms over traditional perspective.
Kōrin's approach to the subject matter is both precise and abstract. While the individual flowers are recognisable, their arrangement across the panels follows a decorative logic. The repetition of the floral clusters and the serpentine path of the water provide a visual balance that guides the eye across the entire width of the screen. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to transform a seasonal theme into a permanent, ornamental arrangement. The use of mineral pigments and gold leaf ensures the colours remain clear and distinct, maintaining the visual impact intended for a grand interior setting. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Kōrin focuses on the essential qualities of the flora and the water, resulting in a composition that is both disciplined and visually arresting.
