A detailed engraving by Hieronymus Wierix depicting the Holy Family in a workshop, with the Christ child gathering wood chips.
This engraving by Hieronymus Wierix depicts a domestic scene from the life of the Holy Family. The composition centres on the young Christ child, who is shown gathering wood chips near his father, Joseph, who works with an axe at a wooden beam. To the left, the Virgin Mary sits at a spinning wheel, her posture calm and focused. An angel stands between the figures, providing a supernatural presence within the humble workshop setting. The scene is framed by a landscape that recedes into the distance, typical of the period's interest in combining narrative detail with atmospheric depth.
Wierix was a member of a prominent family of engravers based in Antwerp. His technical precision is evident in the fine hatching used to model the drapery of the figures and the textures of the wood and foliage. The work includes Latin verses at the base, which provide a theological commentary on the scene, linking the daily labour of the Holy Family to their broader spiritual roles. The inclusion of the 'Cum Gratia et Privilegio' inscription indicates that the print was produced under a formal privilege, a common practice for protecting the rights of printmakers in the late sixteenth century.
The print reflects the Northern Mannerist style, characterised by a blend of naturalistic observation and stylised figure work. The figures possess a certain elegance in their proportions, while the workshop environment is rendered with a high degree of descriptive detail. This piece offers a glimpse into the devotional art of the period, where biblical figures were often placed in recognisable, everyday environments to make their narratives more accessible to the viewer. The balance between the domestic activity and the divine nature of the subjects is managed through the careful placement of the figures and the inclusion of the haloed Christ child.
