A sixteenth-century hand-coloured woodcut depicting the Crucifixion, produced by the Dutch printer Doen Pietersz. for devotional use.
This hand-coloured woodcut by the Dutch printer and publisher Doen Pietersz. depicts the Crucifixion of Christ. The composition follows traditional iconographic conventions of the early sixteenth century, positioning the central figure of Christ on the cross between the two thieves. Below, the Virgin Mary and other figures are gathered in a display of mourning, while a soldier stands nearby with a spear. The work is typical of the small-scale devotional prints produced in the Low Countries during this period, intended for inclusion in prayer books or as affordable religious imagery for private use.
The woodcut technique is characterised by bold, direct lines that define the figures and the surrounding environment. The application of colour, likely added by hand shortly after printing, provides a clear distinction between the figures and the background. The use of a limited palette of red, blue, green, and ochre reflects the practical constraints and aesthetic preferences of early modern print production. The inclusion of the 'INRI' placard at the top of the cross and the specific arrangement of the figures demonstrate the adherence to established theological narratives common in Northern Renaissance art.
Doen Pietersz. was active in Amsterdam during the first half of the sixteenth century, primarily known for his work as a bookseller and publisher. His output often included religious texts and illustrations that circulated among a literate and pious public. This print offers a view into the visual culture of the period, where such imagery functioned as a tool for personal meditation and religious instruction. The physical condition of the print, preserved within a bound volume, suggests its original purpose as a devotional aid. The composition remains balanced, with the verticality of the crosses providing a clear structure against the simplified landscape elements in the background.
