A rare fifteenth-century woodcut depicting the Mystic Winepress, a powerful devotional image symbolising the Eucharist through the sacrifice of Christ.
This woodcut, attributed to the Master of the Martyrdom of the Ten Thousand, depicts the devotional subject of the Mystic Winepress. The imagery draws upon theological metaphors where Christ is shown treading grapes, a visual representation of the Eucharist and the sacrifice of his blood. The composition is stark and direct, characteristic of fifteenth-century German printmaking.
Christ stands within a wooden press, his body marked by the wounds of the Passion. The blood flows from his body and the crushed grapes into a chalice positioned at the base of the press. The artist employs bold, graphic lines to define the structure of the press and the anatomy of the figure. The use of hand-applied colour, specifically the red for the blood and the halo, provides a sharp contrast against the monochrome ink lines.
Such prints were produced for personal devotion, often pasted into prayer books or kept as loose devotional sheets. The style reflects the transition from late Gothic aesthetics toward the more defined forms of the Northern Renaissance. The mechanical nature of the winepress is rendered with a focus on functional clarity, while the figure of Christ remains the central focus of the narrative. This work offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the period, where complex theological concepts were distilled into accessible, portable images for the layperson. The preservation of the original hand-colouring allows for an appreciation of the tactile quality of early print production, where the interaction between the woodblock impression and the pigment creates a unique visual texture.
