A seventeenth-century Italian etching by Giulio Carpioni depicting the Agony in the Garden, featuring Christ and a descending angel.
This etching by Giulio Carpioni depicts the Agony in the Garden, a traditional subject in Christian iconography. Carpioni, a Venetian painter and printmaker, was active during the seventeenth century. His work often features mythological or religious themes, rendered with a distinct focus on atmospheric light and shadow.
In this composition, Christ kneels in the foreground, his gaze directed upward toward an angel who descends from the clouds. The angel holds a chalice, symbolising the cup of suffering. Several putti accompany the angel, emerging from the swirling, cloud-like forms that dominate the upper right quadrant of the print. The tree to the left provides a vertical anchor for the scene, while the ground is suggested through minimal, effective hatching.
Carpioni employs a technique of varied line weights to define the forms. The drapery of Christ's robes is rendered with fluid, sweeping lines, while the clouds and foliage are built up through denser, cross-hatched marks. The contrast between the solid figure of Christ and the ethereal, light-filled space occupied by the celestial figures creates a sense of spiritual tension. The print bears the inscription 'Matio Cadorin forma In Padoa' at the bottom, indicating the publisher's involvement in the production of the plate in Padua. This work reflects the broader Baroque interest in dramatic, emotionally charged narratives, yet it retains a clarity of form characteristic of Carpioni's graphic output. The print is a fine example of seventeenth-century Italian etching, demonstrating the artist's ability to convey complex theological narratives through the economy of black and white lines on paper.
