A study of the Agony in the Garden by Cristoforo Roncalli, featuring ink, wash, and white heightening on brown paper.
This drawing by Cristoforo Roncalli, often known as Cristoforo Pomarancio, depicts the Agony in the Garden. The composition is divided into two distinct zones. In the upper portion, Christ kneels in prayer, receiving comfort from an angel who bears the cross. The lower portion shows the three disciples, Peter, James, and John, overcome by sleep.
Roncalli employs a sophisticated use of wash and white heightening to create a sense of volume and atmosphere. The brown paper acts as a mid-tone, allowing the artist to build form through the contrast of dark ink lines and luminous white highlights. This technique, common among Italian draughtsmen of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, provides a sculptural quality to the figures. The drapery folds are rendered with fluid, calligraphic lines that define the weight and movement of the garments.
As a leading figure in the Roman art scene during the transition from Mannerism to the early Baroque, Roncalli maintained a style characterised by clarity and emotional restraint. His work reflects the influence of the Counter-Reformation, which encouraged artists to present biblical narratives with directness and devotional focus. The arrangement of the figures suggests a clear hierarchy, separating the divine encounter from the human frailty of the sleeping disciples. This study demonstrates the artist's ability to manage complex spatial relationships within a single sheet, using light to guide the viewer's eye across the narrative. The work remains a fine example of the preparatory practices employed by Italian masters to plan larger compositions for altarpieces or frescoes.
