A sixteenth-century religious scene by Lucas Cranach the Younger, depicting Christ surrounded by children and contemporary figures.
This work, attributed to Lucas Cranach the Younger and his workshop, depicts the biblical scene of Christ blessing the children. The composition is characteristic of the Cranach workshop style, which often produced multiple versions of popular religious themes to meet the demands of the Reformation era. The figures are arranged in a frieze-like manner against a flat, light-blue background, a common feature in the Cranach family's output that directs attention to the central interaction between Christ and the infants.
Christ is positioned at the centre, holding one child while another rests in his arms. He is surrounded by a group of adults, including figures dressed in contemporary sixteenth-century German attire. The inclusion of these figures, who resemble the patrons or local nobility of the time, reflects the practice of integrating contemporary society into sacred narratives. The inscription at the top, taken from the Gospel of Mark, provides the theological context for the image, reinforcing the Lutheran emphasis on the accessibility of grace.
The painting displays the workshop's preference for clear outlines and a controlled colour palette. The faces are rendered with a degree of uniformity, typical of the production methods employed in the Cranach studio, where assistants often contributed to the execution of secondary figures and background elements. The soft modelling of the children contrasts with the more rigid, linear treatment of the adult figures, creating a visual distinction between the innocence of the subjects and the solemnity of the observers. This piece offers a clear example of how religious art functioned as both a devotional object and a vehicle for theological instruction in the mid-sixteenth century.
