A dramatic interpretation of the biblical storm, rendered with heavy, expressive brushwork and a deep, moody palette.
This work by Giorgio de Chirico depicts the biblical narrative of Christ calming the storm. Unlike the stark, metaphysical cityscapes for which the artist is most recognised, this composition engages with the traditions of Baroque and Romantic painting. The scene focuses on a small boat tossed by turbulent waves, with Christ resting in the centre, surrounded by his disciples. The application of paint is heavy and gestural, creating a sense of motion that mirrors the agitation of the sea.
De Chirico employs a palette dominated by deep earth tones, ochre, and a striking red for the garment worn by Christ. The lighting is dramatic, casting deep shadows that define the figures and the boat. The artist draws upon the influence of masters such as Delacroix and Rubens, moving away from his earlier, flatter perspectives to embrace a more painterly, emotive approach. The figures are rendered with a sense of urgency, their postures conveying the anxiety of the moment. The sea itself is treated as a chaotic force, with thick brushstrokes suggesting the spray and movement of the water.
During his later career, de Chirico frequently revisited historical and religious themes, often reinterpreting them through his own technical lens. This piece reflects his interest in the materiality of paint and the history of European art. The composition is contained within the boat, creating a claustrophobic tension that contrasts with the vast, threatening environment outside. It is a study in movement and light, demonstrating the artist's technical versatility beyond his early metaphysical period. The work remains a curious example of his return to classical subject matter, executed with the expressive freedom that characterised his later output.
