A detailed etching by Pietro Antonio Martini depicting the biblical meeting of Christ and the centurion, set against a classical architectural backdrop.
This etching depicts the biblical encounter between Jesus and the centurion of Capernaum, a narrative drawn from the Gospel of Matthew. The composition places the figures before a classical portico, characterised by Corinthian columns and masonry that suggests an architectural setting inspired by Roman antiquity. The centurion kneels before Christ, his posture conveying humility and supplication, while a group of onlookers and soldiers observe the interaction.
In the background, the scene opens into a wide, atmospheric vista. An obelisk rises against the horizon, accompanied by domed structures and distant ruins, which provide a sense of scale and historical context. The artist employs precise line work to define the textures of the stone, the folds of the garments, and the foliage. The use of cross-hatching creates depth, particularly in the shadowed areas beneath the portico and the modelling of the figures.
Pietro Antonio Martini, an Italian engraver active during the late eighteenth century, was known for his technical proficiency in reproducing complex scenes. His work often reflects the aesthetic values of the period, which favoured clear, rational compositions and a return to classical forms. The print demonstrates a balance between the narrative focus on the central figures and the expansive, detailed environment. The inclusion of the obelisk and classical architecture serves to ground the biblical event within a visual language familiar to European audiences of the era. This piece is an example of the printmaking traditions that circulated religious and historical imagery throughout the eighteenth century, offering a window into the period's interpretation of classical and sacred themes.
