This woodblock print by Kuwagata Keisai, also known as Kitao Masayoshi, belongs to the kacho-ga tradition, which focuses on the depiction of birds and flowers. The composition is balanced and restrained, typical of the artist's approach to natural subjects. A single oriole perches on a branch to the left, observing a large, blooming peony flower that dominates the right side of the frame. The artist employs a muted palette, allowing the soft orange of the peony petals and the subtle greens of the foliage to emerge against the warm, paper-toned background.
Keisai was a versatile artist who transitioned from the ornate style of the Utagawa school to a more simplified, direct manner of representation.
