This woodblock print originates from the Chikudō gafu nihen, a collection of works by the Japanese artist Ki Chikudō. As a practitioner of the Bunjinga style, Chikudō focused on the ideals of the scholar-painter, prioritising personal expression and poetic atmosphere over strict realism. The composition depicts a quiet scene of a thatched hut situated near water, where a figure sits in contemplation. The surrounding bamboo and the soft, muted tones of the print evoke a sense of solitude and scholarly retreat, which are common themes within the literati tradition.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of late nineteenth-century Japanese woodblock printing. The lines are delicate and controlled, defining the architecture of the hut and the organic forms of the bamboo with economy.
