This lithograph, titled Chevaux de ferme, captures a quiet moment within a stable yard. Théodore Géricault, a central figure in French Romanticism, produced this work during his later years, a period when he turned his attention toward the lives of working animals and the people who tended them. The composition focuses on two heavy draught horses, their muscular forms rendered with precise, delicate lithographic strokes. A young boy stands beside the animals, his hand resting gently on the mane of the nearest horse, while a man looks on from the left.

The scene avoids the dramatic, high-tension subjects often associated with Géricault, such as his famous depictions of military cavalry or shipwrecks. Instead, the artist provides a grounded, observational study of rural labour. The architecture of the stable, with its simple stone walls and arched doorway, provides a neutral backdrop that allows the physical presence of the horses to dominate the frame. The use of light and shadow creates a sense of volume, particularly in the musculature of the horses and the folds of the figures' clothing.

Lithography allowed Géricault to experiment with tonal range, moving away from the rigid lines of traditional engraving to achieve a softer, more painterly effect.
