A study of a blooming chestnut tree, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1890, featuring his signature rhythmic brushwork and a palette of deep greens.
Painted in May 1890 during his final months in Auvers-sur-Oise, this work captures a chestnut tree in full bloom. Vincent van Gogh produced this piece shortly after leaving the asylum at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. The composition focuses on the dense, rounded form of the tree, which occupies the majority of the canvas.
The application of paint is characteristic of his late period, featuring short, rhythmic brushstrokes that build texture and movement across the foliage. The palette is dominated by various shades of green, ranging from deep, dark tones in the shadows to lighter, yellowish greens where the light catches the leaves. Small, vertical dabs of white and pale yellow represent the blossoms, creating a sense of light filtering through the canopy.
Unlike his earlier, more structured works, the application here feels urgent and direct. The background is treated with similar energy, with swirling strokes that suggest the atmosphere surrounding the tree. A small section of a stone wall is visible at the lower left, providing a sense of scale and grounding the organic form within a specific location. The lack of a clear horizon line pushes the tree forward, making it the primary subject of the viewer's attention.
This painting reflects the artist's preoccupation with the natural world as a source of renewal. By focusing on the seasonal change of the chestnut tree, he documents a specific moment in the spring cycle. The work remains a clear example of his ability to translate the physical presence of a subject into a personal, expressive visual language. It is a study of light, colour, and the tactile quality of oil paint, demonstrating his technical control and his observational approach to the environment during his final period of productivity.
