A formal 1754 engraving by Nicolas Gabriel Dupuis depicting Charles François Paul Le Normant de Tournehèm, the French Director of Royal Buildings.
This engraving by Nicolas Gabriel Dupuis depicts Charles François Paul Le Normant de Tournehèm, a figure of significant administrative authority in eighteenth-century France. As the Directeur Général des Bâtiments du Roi, Tournehèm held responsibility for the royal buildings, gardens, and arts. The portrait serves as a formal record of his status, executed with the technical precision characteristic of the period's reproductive printmaking.
Dupuis employs a sophisticated range of tonal values to render the textures of the subject's attire. The heavy embroidery on the coat is articulated through fine, rhythmic lines, while the lace cravat and cuffs demonstrate a mastery of light and shadow. The composition includes symbolic elements common to official portraiture of the era. To the left, a large ornamental vase features relief carvings, suggesting the subject's patronage of the arts. To the right, a draped curtain reveals a small allegorical figure, likely representing Justice or Wisdom, which reinforces the gravity of his public office. The background is kept relatively restrained to ensure the focus remains on the sitter's composed expression and posture.
This work was produced for the artist's reception into the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1754. It reflects the standard of craftsmanship required for such an induction, where the engraver was expected to demonstrate both technical skill and an ability to convey the dignity of the sitter. The lower margin contains a detailed inscription, complete with the subject's titles and the artist's signature, framed by a decorative cartouche. The print provides a clear view into the visual culture of the French court, where portraiture functioned as a tool for documenting the hierarchy of the state. The balance between the sitter's individual features and the surrounding symbolic objects creates a structured, formal image that adheres to the conventions of mid-eighteenth-century French printmaking.
