A Baroque allegorical painting by Cesare Dandini, depicting the virtue of Charity through a mother and children with symbolic elements.
Cesare Dandini, a Florentine painter active during the seventeenth century, produced this allegorical representation of Charity. The composition follows the traditional iconographic depiction of the virtue, featuring a central female figure nursing an infant, accompanied by two putti. One putto pours water from a vessel, while the other gestures towards a burning brazier, symbols associated with the purification and warmth of selfless love.
Dandini employs the dramatic lighting characteristic of the Baroque period. The figures emerge from a dark, indistinct background, with the light source directed to model the forms of the mother and children. The palette relies on saturated primary colours, specifically the deep blue of the woman's mantle and the vivid red of her skirt, which contrast against the pale, soft flesh tones of the infants. The woman wears a floral wreath, a detail that adds a decorative element to the otherwise solemn subject matter.
The artist demonstrates a focus on anatomical precision and the tactile quality of drapery. The folds of the fabric are rendered with fluid brushwork, creating a sense of volume and weight. The expressions of the figures remain composed, avoiding excessive emotional display, which aligns with the refined approach often seen in Florentine painting of this era. The inclusion of the brazier at the bottom left provides a grounding element for the composition, balancing the verticality of the main group. This work reflects the period's interest in personifying abstract virtues through human form, a common practice in Italian art of the seventeenth century. The print captures the tonal shifts and the specific colour relationships of the original oil painting, allowing for a clear view of the artist's technique and the balanced arrangement of the figures within the frame.
