A classic Impressionist study of Charing Cross Bridge, capturing the atmospheric light and fog of the London Thames in 1903.
Claude Monet painted this view of Charing Cross Bridge during his extended stays in London between 1899 and 1901. He continued to refine these canvases in his Giverny studio, completing the series for exhibition in 1903. The work captures the atmospheric conditions of the Thames, where industrial fog and smoke from coal fires interact with the shifting light of the sun.
Monet focuses on the bridge as a horizontal structure that divides the composition. The silhouette of the Houses of Parliament emerges faintly in the distance, rendered in soft, muted tones that dissolve into the surrounding haze. The artist employs a palette dominated by violet, blue, and gold, using short, broken brushstrokes to convey the movement of light across the water. The surface of the river acts as a mirror, reflecting the sun and the bridge in a series of shimmering, indistinct shapes.
This series represents a shift in Monet's practice, moving away from the clear, bright light of the French countryside toward the more complex, obscured conditions of the London environment. By prioritising the perception of light over the physical details of the architecture, Monet creates a study of colour and atmosphere. The bridge itself becomes a secondary element, subordinate to the interplay of fog and reflection. This approach allows the viewer to observe the transition of light as it filters through the dense air of the city, turning the industrial scene into a study of ephemeral effects.
