A characterful etching by Jules de Goncourt, depicting the eighteenth-century painter Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin through expressive, rhythmic line work.
This etching by Jules de Goncourt captures the likeness of the eighteenth-century French painter Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin. Goncourt, better known for his literary collaborations with his brother Edmond, was also an accomplished amateur printmaker. His approach to the medium reflects a keen interest in the history of French art, particularly the masters of the previous century.
The portrait demonstrates a direct, unadorned style. Goncourt employs a series of short, rhythmic lines to define the contours of the face and the texture of the subject's wig. The cross-hatching across the cheeks and forehead provides a sense of volume, while the eyes are rendered with a focus on depth and expression. The technique is characteristic of the etching revival movement, which sought to return to the expressive potential of the needle and acid bath, moving away from the rigid commercial engraving styles of the era.
By choosing to depict Chardin, Goncourt pays homage to a figure whose work was undergoing a critical reappraisal during the nineteenth century. The composition is cropped tightly, focusing entirely on the head and shoulders. This framing forces the viewer to engage with the subject's gaze and the subtle play of light across his features. The plate shows signs of the artist's hand, with visible marks and a raw, immediate quality that distinguishes it from more polished academic works. It is a study of character, executed with a clear appreciation for the graphic possibilities of the etching process. The print offers a glimpse into the personal artistic interests of the Goncourt brothers, who were central figures in the cultural life of Paris during the Second Empire.
