Beschreibung
A surrealist composition by Francis Picabia, featuring layered faces and organic forms in a warm, ochre-toned palette.
Catax, painted by Francis Picabia around 1929, belongs to the artist's transparency period. During these years, Picabia moved away from his earlier mechanical drawings, choosing instead to layer multiple images upon a single surface. This technique creates a dreamlike effect where figures, faces, and botanical elements occupy the same space without clear separation.
The composition features several overlapping profiles and frontal views of faces, rendered with thin, fluid lines. These forms appear to float against a warm, ochre-toned background. The layering creates a sense of depth that is not physical but psychological, as if the viewer is observing a collection of memories or thoughts simultaneously. The presence of hands and floral motifs adds a human and organic quality to the otherwise abstract arrangement of features.
Picabia, a central figure in the Dada movement, often rejected traditional artistic conventions. In this work, he avoids a single point of focus, forcing the eye to move across the canvas to decipher the various forms. The blue-spotted texture on one of the central figures provides a contrast to the otherwise monochromatic orange and brown palette. This work demonstrates the artist's interest in the fluidity of perception and the rejection of fixed reality. It is a characteristic example of his later work, where he experimented with the boundaries between representation and abstraction.
