A delicate ink and colour painting by Xugu, featuring a cat observing butterflies near a bamboo fence, rendered in the expressive Shanghai School style.
This work by Xugu, a monk-painter associated with the Shanghai School, demonstrates the artist's unconventional approach to the traditional bird-and-flower genre. Xugu is known for his idiosyncratic brushwork and his ability to imbue animal subjects with a distinct, almost human, personality. In this composition, a cat stands near a bamboo fence, its form rendered with a light, dotted outline that contrasts with the more solid, ink-heavy treatment of the surrounding chrysanthemums.
The cat appears to be observing a group of butterflies hovering in the upper portion of the frame. The artist employs a sparse, balanced composition, leaving significant negative space that allows the eye to move between the floral elements and the insects. The brushwork is calligraphic, reflecting Xugu's training and his background as a Buddhist monk. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on subtle washes of ink and muted earth tones to define the textures of the fur, the petals of the flowers, and the structure of the fence.
Unlike the more rigid academic styles of the period, Xugu's technique prioritises expressive freedom. The cat's posture, with its tail raised and body slightly hunched, captures a moment of quiet curiosity. The inclusion of the butterflies adds a sense of movement to the otherwise still scene. The vertical orientation of the work is typical of traditional hanging scrolls, designed to be viewed in a contemplative setting. The calligraphy integrated into the right side of the composition serves as both a signature and a poetic element, balancing the visual weight of the chrysanthemums on the left. This piece offers a clear view into the stylistic innovations of late Qing dynasty painting, where individual expression began to take precedence over strict adherence to classical models.
